I have been briefed with this module today to run alongside the rest of my modules throughout the entirety of my final year. Although there may seem to be a lot on my plate to consider whilst running along projects such as my final student film and my dissertation, I am lucky that I have already made considerations to the deliverables that this module has tasked us with producing. This truly is a module that focuses more on what we want to be personally equipped with after our academic time is over.
What I already have so far that can be incorporated into this module are the following...
Live Brief: Luckily I have already agreed to take part in a live brief that was set by Manchester's Halle Symphony Orchestra to the animation students of Salford University. The brief is as follows:
Who: The Hallé is Manchester’s symphony orchestra since 1858. As well as performing in live concerts, we have deep commitments to community, education, choral and youth ensembles (e.g. Youth Choir, Youth Orchestra, etc.) based projects as well as commercial opportunities with sponsors and local businesses. Alex Connock is non executive director. He also runs production company Missile Digital Studios.
What: Alex is creating and directing a short animated film designed to encourage people to think differently about classical music
Summary:
"The Airport"
Dedicated classical pianist leaves his mundane city flat, and commutes by subway, in his concert tails, to a depressing job at the airport.
All day he plays the same, simple sequence of three notes (G, C, E) for monotonous flight announcements, hidden away in the back rooms of a bleak, grey, modern departures terminal. Even the announcements girl doesn’t even notice him.
But one morning on a rainy December day, he takes a massive gamble. He plays one, single wrong note: G, C, F. Everyone looks up in astonishment.
This one, tiny act of rebellion unleashes other risks too. People look up from their phones. People talk to strangers. And soon we see in the airport a joyous progression into lavishly expressive piano music over the airwaves – Chopin’s Fantasie Impromptu – and happy, interactive people everywhere. What follows is fulfilment - not only for the pianist himself, but also everyone else in the airport, as the busy Christmas Eve travel unfolds and the snow falls outside. And the announcements girl not only notices the pianist, but goes for a Christmas drink with him.
How: We will provide a full script. We need the video animated. It will probably be about 90 seconds long.
The animation style is really up to the students to propose
Students must be aware of copyright restrictions on music. We will provide cleared music.
It will be up to the students to provide a soundtrack of other effects to go with the animation.
Recommended Adobe Creative Cloud suite for clean handover of all assets, projects and content for the benefit of Bill.
In case of data corruption, students must make sure they back up everything at all times
Following the song: Chopin - Fantaisie Impromptu, Op. 66 (Rubinstein) is the piece of music that our animation is inspired from.
With regards to the other deliverables of this module, I am thankful to say, that due to my various extra curricular projects and event volunteering done over the past two years, I already have a foundation for a lot of the deliverables required.
Digital Online and/or Print based Portfolio: Is something which I already have with regards to this very website. which is something I have already updated a few times and is something I will probably update again with regards to branding.
In terms of a physical print I am already in the process of updating and printing out some production bibles from my last two projects from second year. The projects I am reffering to are: Specialist Animation Studies: The Visual Language of Appeal within Character Design & Engagement Challenge: The Piccadilly Rats: Live in Moderation.
Showreel:
I have made several showreels throughout my time as an animator, my most recent one is more polished than the others but needs to be updated with all of the projects that I was a part of over the summer.
Creative CV .pdf – and LinkedIn profile:
I currently have a CV that is tailored to part time work. One of my aims for this module is to flesh out my creative CV for animation. Visually this needs to look more appealing and be updated with my animation accolades, however many few that might be.
I created a LinkedIn profile over the summer with aims of improving my networking abilities. I hope to add more contacts to my network after the events that shall take place at MAF.
I am planning to do volunteer work at MAF but thus far I am yet to receive an acceptation or rejection onto the volunteer team.
If I don't get onto the volunteering team, then these are the events that I plan to get tickets for, as I think these are the most relevant to my personal development within my career.
(Insert screenshots of events that I am aiming to do)
Personal Marketing Collateral:
(I made a conscious decision in my last engagement project to update all of my social media to accommodate my personal branding.
Twitter:
Youtube:
I am also planning on realising a Facebook page that can be a one-stop-shop for most of my work:
Thanks to the Northwestivus and CMC events that I attended last November, I do have a draft of business cards that I am aiming to have printed out professionally.
Learning Journey Presentation:
Obviously this is something required of this module, but I can say that a lot of what will influence this presentation will be fleshed out by the other deliverables and the engagement project I chose to work on.
Blog Posts:
Like for many of my previous modules throughout first and second year, this blog that I have kept for university will contain evidencing for this module. I think that this will be the only module that I will have to keep a blog for in third year, because everything else is now being assessed on casebooks, which admittedly is something I prefer to work on.
I have also created a Skills audit of myself to assess where I am at in my progress over the course of university, as well as to help inform my creative CV.
For the next session of this module,we will be comparing our skills audits and learning about how to implement them into our CV's and business persona. I found this chart helpful for assessing where I am currently at in my animation career and realise there is still a lot more to be done with regards to making sure I am ready to be employable, come my graduation.
