Introduction to Making of Winter Holiday Project (Phase III): The Making of Video
I used Adobe Premier to edit my making of video:
I had written out a rough script of what I was to say in the video in my sketch book:
I recorded these snippets of sound using the only recording device I had available to me, in this case, my webcam. At first, I used Photo Booth to record my voice:
But I soon realised it was far more efficient, time-wise and memory-wise to use adobe audition, this also made the sound editing a lot quicker, rather than separating the audio and visuals in Premier and chopping up the audio.
I downloaded the videos from my research, using a YouTube to mp4 converter and edited sections of the footage I wanted to use (I made sure all footage was properly credited for at the end of my my making of video).
Any other parts of the making of video where I wasn't narrating, I was filming myself, (as mentioned previously in my development blog)
As you can see from the raw footage below, I had real issues with memorising lines or getting a shot correct. I am attributing this to not having a script for reference at these points, you'll notice in the making of video that these parts of the narration feel a lot more loose and can sometimes feel quite jarring, compared to the tone and delivery of the scripted voice over. For comparison- Scripted voice-over outtakes (Much more opportunity to select the right sound bite as there are many to choose from... They are all delivered in varying ways):
Improvised vlog outtakes (Due to most of the soundbites sounding completely different as I'm not working off a script here, the delivery is somewhat less refined as I'd like it to be):
This is something that I'll bare in mind for future briefs that require similar work processes. And finally, below are my two final outcomes for this brief:-
Animatic for The Bog The Dead and The Horny:
The Making of: The Bog The Dead and The Horny:
In conclusion, as I say in the video, I really do want to take the ideas for The Bog The Dead and The Horny further in the future. I'm only dissapointed in myself that I didn't get the ball rolling sooner. Once I got passionate about this concept and these characters processes like writing the script, recording the narration, editing and mixing the sound and animating the animatic came quickly and easily to me, I was really enjoying myself. It seems I keep on having problems with inspiration not coming to me soon enough. It was because of this that I couldn't actually finish a fully fleshed out animation, which I have to be honest about, is a really crushing blow. I am pleased however at what I've taken away from this editorial process and how I even enjoyed some aspects of this making of video. Even though it was hard to juggle making the animatic and then making the making of video, I found that the documentary-style of video was also something I had a bit of natural talent in, especially when referring to my research. I did find that it is exceedingly difficult to assume a presenter role or convey a natural speaking voice on camera. In many ways it was almost like having to act, but the character was myself. This is something I really want to work better on, as sometimes I couldn't help but think I sounded ridiculous when trying to act natural. It could be rather cringe worthy. Overall this process was quite a large brief to take on entirely in my free time (i.e. the holidays), it was daunting and perhaps that's why I put it off for so long. Hopefully my efforts in the end did pay off and this brief will be an entertaining animatic and video for my lecturers and classmates to watch.
