Apr 24, 2017 We've taken a more visual approach in todays lecture, with a focus on where we'll be marked for the aesthetics of our articles. Johny directed our attention to a book by graphic designer, Massimo Vignelli, called: THE VIGNELLI CANON There is an emphasis put on the idea of all clean layouts being placed into even and measured grids and guides of many varieties.

We were then tasked to play about with InDesign to get a feel for utilising these grids and guides tools.

Fortunately, I am already familiar with InDesign. In fact I am using said program for my Storytelling-Script to Screen module, in the form of a casebook. I decided to test out the grid features on this document:

They really helped me in dissecting the pages paragraphs and the text placement became far more efficient around the images. Johny has also directed us towards this section of the library:

I have also elected to look at the selection of the library, where magazines are available in. Using examples from the layouts that I have photographed below, I have began to sketch out 'Scribble-then-Mac' ideas for my article. This way I can "Design before InDesign". From this I can have more of an understanding of where my images and texts will be placed when arranging the layout of my article. The Vignelli canon will also come into play here as well.

I also found inspiration from my pinterest boards as well.

These have influenced my scribble then mac designs. I hope to recreate some of the techniques used here. Possibly creating paths that my text can follow. I think that a uniform text box will not suit the subject matter that I am discussing, as psychedelic artwork.

I even started experimenting with some of the screenshots I took whilst watching the Yellow Submarine commentary: This glitchy effect is something that I definitely want to utilise within the aesthetics of my article as I think this particular effect replicates the artwork of post-modern psychedelia.

I have also started writing out the text for my article.

I'm struggling with the mid-section of the article I hope to have my text reviewed by Johny before next week so I can get this part of the task finished off and begin the more leisurely task of designing the layout and experimenting with some psychedelic artwork.
